Senate Rules Committee Appoints Two New Coastal Commissioners: Kinsey and Bochco
Yesterday, Marin County Supervisor Steve Kinsey was given the nod to serve as the North Central Coast Elected Representative on the California Coastal Commission. Senate president pro tem Darrell Steinberg, D-Sacramento, appointed Kinsey for a four-year term on the Commission, following his experience as an alternate Coastal Commissioner from 2007 to 2009. Sebastopol City Councilmember Sarah Gurney, the number one choice by a group of environmental organizations that interviewed candidates, was re-appointed as an alternate. Gurney was formerly an alternate to San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi in the previous four-year term, as well.
An environmental activist from the Los Angeles area, Dayna Bochco, was also appointed by the Senate Rules Committee to replace long time Commissioner Sara Wan. Wan had served 15 years on the Commission and was looked to as a leader from staff and other environmentalists. Wan consistently rated as a high, if not the highest, Commissioner Voting Score in the California Coastal Commission Voting Chart. The Los Angeles Times reports that Wan riled the state Democratic Leadership; however, with her controversial election as Chair of the Coastal Commission.
Bochco sits on the Board of environmental groups such as Heal the Bay and Natural Resources Defense Council's Southern California Leadership Council. Her well-known husband, Steven Bochco, is a Hollywood producer, and the couple run a production company together.
